With Roma just hours away, two Chelsea men have been discussing form and finals.

Didier Drogba, currently injured, and Florent Malouda, playing some of the best football since his arrival at Stamford Bridge 15 months ago, were team-mates in their younger days at Guingamp in France.

There the pair formed a bond that stayed with them until the present day - Malouda cited the Ivorian as a major reason for signing on last July, and the pair lined up together in May's Champions League Final in Moscow.

Since then, their fortunes have been contrasting, with Drogba suffering from knee and ankle injuries that have restricted his appearances this season to five, while Malouda has cemented his place in Luiz Felipe Scolari's side, and has appeared so far in every game of the 2008/09 campaign.

As attentions again turn to Champions League football, Drogba, injured at Cluj, looks back to his formative years and recalls memories of the competition.

'When I was 17 or 18 I was watching the Champions League every Tuesday or Wednesday with my friends, eating pizza, seeing Raul and all these players scoring goals, and the music of the Champions League really motivated me at that time,' he said.

The Chelsea man is just a couple of years younger than the Real Madrid forward, and was something of a late developer in elite club football, making his mark on the British public during a Uefa Cup run with Marseille in 2003/04, months before signing for Chelsea. Since then he has won two league titles, an FA Cup and a Carling Cup, but no Champions League.

'It is like a dream, even coming out of the tunnel here and listening to this music, I get motivation from this,' Drogba added. 'The only thing I still want is to win the European Cup.'

He has come close, sent off in Moscow as we eventually succumbed to Manchester United on penalties.

Despite the heartache, Drogba, who was linked with a transfer over the summer, has re-watched the game and believes we can use it as motivation this time around.

'Losing was another reason for me to stay, but even before the Final I knew I was going to stay because I spoke with some people around me and the best thing was to stay.

'Last year we were not far from doing it, we were really close. To lose it again on penalties is something really difficult but at the same time you could see during the game we were doing a fantastic job and could have won.'

The football played by Luiz Felipe Scolari's side this season has seen our Champions League odds shorten, and Malouda, who has contributed goals and assists is feeling positive.

With a run of injuries firmly behind him, he believes we are now seeing the best of him.

'In this moment it is right but I know that the season is very long. This year I am in the best form but I think last year I showed it sometimes, not every time.

'I am a player used to playing at that level as a regular player, last year was ups and downs. Sometimes it happens. I knew it was my first year and as I always said I came here for four years and I came here to spend four years at Chelsea.'

Acclimatisation was not immediate, but the 28-year-old is now settled, and enjoying life in the squad.

'With all the injuries we have the spirit is good, we know we have a group of quality players and you can see that every game we have everybody is enjoying himself on the pitch,' he explained.

'I had to be patient and accept things in life. When you work in training you have to be confident and I am trying to show it right now.

'I hope in May when we have finals to play that I could keep that form and win titles with Chelsea.'
